LenSx Cataract Surgery

Greetings!

In our ongoing efforts to inform you of the latest developments in eye care and eye health we invite you to read our newsletter.  In this issue we highlight Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery.

Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery

The surgeons of Pacific Eye Specialists are pleased to let you know that we have established our new state of the art laser assisted cataract surgery program.  This is a technology that we have been waiting for, and we are very pleased to be able to offer it to our patients who need cataract surgery.

Traditional cataract surgery has involved the use of a blade to create several critical microscopic incisions during the procedure. Advanced technology utilizing a Femtosecond laser is now available to plan and perform cataract surgery with laser precision. The role of the Femtosecond laser in cataract surgery is to assist or replace key steps during manual cataract surgery. The Femtosecond laser technology can also aid the surgeon in the correction of corneal astigmatism.

Femtosecond lasers have been used successfully in ophthalmology surgery since 2001. The technology has been applied widely, most notably in LASIK refractive surgery. It has been investigated for cataract surgery since 2008. There are several types of cataract laser systems, and the surgeons of Pacific Eye Specialists have chosen the LenSx laser system which is designed by Alcon Surgical, one of the finest surgery technology companies in the world. The LenSx was the first FDA approved Femtosecond laser system for use in cataract surgery.

The LenSx laser system automates the most challenging steps of traditional cataract surgery, such as performing corneal incisions, opening the capsule and softening and breaking up the cataract. With the LenSx laser,  the surgeon can create incisions with a higher degree of precision and customization. This technology also incorporates an advanced imagining system which provides both real-time video as well as three-dimensional visualization during surgery to enable the surgeon to custom design a treatment plan that is individually tailored to each surgery patient's eyes.

Potential Benefits of Laser Cataract Surgery

Potential benefits of laser cataract surgery include more accurate and less traumatic incisions, faster healing of these incisions and greater precision in performing the intricate incisions made inside the eye. In addition, the LenSx laser can significantly reduce the amount of energy that needs to be transmitted into the eye to remove the cataract, potentially allowing faster visual recovery.

If you or someone you know has been experiencing glare, cloudiness, faded colors or blurry vision, it may be due to the development of cataract. We feel that we are entering into an exciting and promising new era in cataract surgery. We welcome you to contact a member of our staff to schedule a consultation.

Sincerely,

Pacific Eye Specialists
